DARTMOUTH WINS BACK-TO-BACK CRC TITLES!

This past weekend at PPL Stadium in Pennsylvania, sixteen of the nation’s top collegiate rugby teams battled for the right to be called CRC National Champions.

Following a day and a half of competition, four teams set themselves apart from the pack: Life University, the small chiropractic school from Marietta, Georgia making their debut appearance at the CRC; the legends from out west, Cal; the Arizona Wildcats, led by USA Eagle Peter Tiberio; and the defending champions, Dartmouth.

The first semi-final match placed Life vs. Arizona.  Dan Payne, head coach of the Life Running Eagles, referred to the game as one of the biggest matches in school history.  Already well respected in 15s, Life looked to expand their national notoriety by advancing to the finals.  On the other side, Arizona hoped to send off team captain Peter Tiberio out with a national title.  Both teams looked evenly matched and went into the half with Arizona leading 7-5.  Arizona came out firing after the break with quick tries by Jack Arnold and Tiberio.  Life was never able to close the gap and the final score sat at 19-12.

In the second semi, Cal and Dartmouth played a shoot out and kept the game close throughout.  Cal pulled ahead taking the lead 17-9, and entering the final minute of the game, it looked as if Cal would play spoiler to Dartmouth’s attempt to repeat as champs.  But with 43 seconds left to play, the Big Green scored a try under the posts to tie the game.  Derrick Fish added the conversion, securing the victory 19-17.

In the third place match Cal took the lead early and never relinquished it.  Life was never able to gain the poise they had earlier in the tournament and lost 26-7.

In the final, Arizona was plagued with injuries, beginning when star player Peter Tiberio suffered a broken forearm while attempting to make a tackle.  Immediately after, Trent Fisher suffered a high ankle sprain.  With the loss of two of their key players Arizona was never able to get the stride they had before.  Dartmouth on the other hand, played their best game of the tournament, and their efforts were more than enough to secure their second consecutive CRC title with a score of 24-5.

SUMMER 7s IS HERE!

It’s summer time in America – and on the rugby scene – that means it’s 7s time!

Watch for teams from all over Texas and California raising awareness for our organization.

CRC 7s ON NBC!

It’s almost time for the USA 7s Collegiate Rugby Championship Invitational, scheduled for 2 & 3 June 2012 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., just outside Philadelphia.

In keeping with the tournament’s historical approach, the teams invited have been chosen for their quality of rugby, fan following, and the potential for exciting rivalries.

Seven teams make their third straight appearance at the CRC, including 2011 champions Dartmouth, and 2011 runners-up Army. Local favorites Penn State, Army’s rivals Navy, 2010 runners-up Cal, as well as Notre Dame and Arizona, all return for a third go-round.

Florida returns to the CRC after a one-year hiatus, while 2010 champions Utah are not on the list and will have to qualify if they want to be there again.

Three teams will make a repeat engagement after making their debuts in 2011: rivals Texas and Oklahoma, and locals Temple.

Meanwhile Maryland, North Carolina State, Wisconsin and Delaware will compete in the CRC for the first time. Life University claim their spot thanks to qualifying through the Las Vegas tournament.

This 7s event is one of the largest in the country, and the first to gain valuable Television coverage for a non-international tournament.

2012 CRC 7s READY FOR ACTION!

NOTRE DAME 7s WOW 30,000 CROWD!

In the historic Notre Dame Football Stadium, the Notre Dame Men’s Rugby team hosted a 7s exhibition match against the Men’s Rugby Club of Aspen, a group of US 7s olympic team hopefuls. One of them was James Aldridge, a recent Notre Dame Alumnus and former running back for the Irish.

After his stellar career for the Irish, Aldridge changed directions and decided to pursue rugby, training with the Irish for a bit, before moving to New Zealand to train full time.

Apart from Aldridge, who played many games in that stadium, it was the first experience for all of the other ruggers, in front of 32,000 cheering fans. And boy were they cheering. Rugby is a sport that contains all the excitement and impact of football, with the non-stop action of hockey. The fans were instantly delighted by the fast pace and hard hits.

The roars began to build up about midway through the period when winger Dom Carsaro tried to win the corner, but was pushed out 10 yards away from the end zone. The first and only score came with about a minute left in the 7 minute Exhibition, when first, senior Dan Scheper made a crucial interception and passed to sophomore Byron Henry on a cut back. Henry split 2 defenders and found senior David Harrington who offloaded in contact to senior Chris “Sparky” Pesigan who sprinted 60 yards for the Irish try. “It was the best experience of my life” stated Sparky, a sentiment echoed by many of the Irish.

The 7s portion of the season is now in high gear with fitness baseline tests this week and skill sessions with 7s Coach David Fee. The Irish will make their next 7s appearance in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 7s Collegiate Rugby Championships June 2nd, and 3rd. It will be the Irish’s third consecutive year to be featured in the tournament and they will look to continue their success from last year as they made it to the Challenger Cup Final.
